Erdős Problem #87

OPENdatabase updated 2025-08-31

No proof or disproof is known, and it isn't known whether a finite computation could settle it.

What the community database records, not our verdict. erdosproblems.com no longer shows statuses (why).

Let \(0 < \epsilon < 1\). Is it true that, if \(k\) is sufficiently large, then \[R(G) > (1-\epsilon)^k R(k)\] for every graph \(G\) with chromatic number \(\chi(G)=k\)? The restriction \(\epsilon < 1\) excludes negative bases in \((1-\epsilon)^k\). This problem is #12 in Ramsey Theory in the graphs problem collection.
